a survey (and an explanation)
it has come to my attention that I have A CRAPTON of unfinished WIP Destiel fics sitting in my documents folder, all of which I absolutely love
tl;dr– HERE IS A GOOGLE SURVEY (I want to know if you’d like to read my abandoned, unfinished fics)
most are decent enough to publish, but I have no intention of ever finishing (due to my health, or to the fact I wasn’t fully passionate about the idea, or to the fact the story was going to be too long, or because I got distracted/bored/tired, or because I re-used the ideas in a different way for a better fic that actually made it to completion).
my question is: would you, as a reader of my Destiel fics, be interested in seeing a chaptered work on AO3, each chapter being a different unfinished work? (unless I publish them like that, the majority of my portfolio would very quickly become unfinished works, and that ain’t happening)
the subjects vary between things you’ve probably come to expect of me. fluff, (so much fluff), some angst, bisexual!Dean, asexual!Cas, kid!Destiel, crossdressing, prince AUs, road trip AUs, a Tangled AU, AUs of things I’ve probably forgotten about but there’s literally 15+ stories that I adore the heck out of, I’m just never gonna get back to them.
to be clear, these aren’t scrappy half-formed ideas that weren’t ~good enough~ to finish. these are the stories I stumble across years later, re-read, and start kicking myself for not finishing. they’re good readin’. they’re just not finished. most of them end abruptly at an interesting part. sometimes there’s notes that explain the rest, sometimes there aren’t. (from what I’ve dug up so far, they vary from about 3k to 30k.)
also, to be clear: I’M STILL GOING TO WRITE MORE STORIES. do not worry. I just have a lot decent things sitting around that deserve to be enjoyed.
of course, there are fics in my drafts that I cannot bear to abandon, and refuse to abandon. (such as the Harry Potter/Supernatural crossover AU “How to Charm the Wizard of Your Dreams”, which is finished but unedited, and I fully intend to work on it as soon as I’m physically and mentally able to.) some WIPs have been abandoned for years but I still hope I’ll get back to them (like a random tattoo-related AU that needs re-writing, and the 280k+ Anastasia-inspired AU I wrote immediately after “Angelhawke”)
also, would you rather just see the part of the story that’s completed, or would you like to see my notes that detail the rest of the story?
rather than just going “yeah what the hell” and just doing it, I wanted to ask for feedback. because I’m fully aware that I haven’t posted a lot in the past year and I’m a tiny bit worried this is just gonna annoy some of you, if all you’re getting in your inbox are unfinished fics.
honestly though, my instinct already says yes, post as chapters, add the notes, and let you guys skip if you don’t wanna see any of it. but I’m really curious to see what y’all think.
I know a lot of you won’t read WIPs, which is understandable, but in particular I want to hear from the people who always comment asking for more chapters on oneshot fics, or sequels on 50k completed fics. would you be able to handle a LARGE REPERTOIRE of fics that you may fall in love with, but Will Not Ever Be Continued?
also I’m currently writing a Christmas AU and I pray I’ll be able to finish it because it’s literally a rehash of 5 other unfinished WIPs and I don’t think I could bear the shaaaame
no I probably could actually, judging by the number of abandoned WIPs ‘d forgotten about
