Here’s the thing about being in a cartoon. It tends to make you act…cartoonish. Like, traits are exaggerated for comedic effect. If anything, Dean flirting with Daphne (who is a literal cartoon of a woman) makes his performance of heterosexuality seem ridiculous and over-exaggerated. Or, I should say, reveals it as ridiculous and over-exaggerated. If Dean hitting on a girl is totally in keeping with a cartoon that means it’s not the full extent of who he is. Cartoon Dean is goofy with his crush. Regular Dean is…something else.

I would truly love if they used a freaking Scooby Doo crossover to do significant emotional exposition that they’re somehow not able to do in their regular universe. It would be so great. It could work too. You know how in “Hunter Heroici” the cartoon dude’s heart burst out of his chest with love/desire? I doubt that would happen, but I think it’s possible we’ll get Dean playing matchmaker to Fred and Daphne (he’s a fan after all! he’s gotta have his ships!). And maybe one of them tries to play matchmaker in return. “Is there anyone special for you, Dean?” “What? <gulp> um, uh, no. I’m, uh, I’m single. Yeah. That’s what I am.” <cartoon blush spreads over face> <possible knowing look from Sam> <possible incredulous look from someone else> <Cas stares off into space unaware that this conversation is about him>

Not that Dean isn’t crushing on Daphne. We are in a Dr. Sexy situation here! Who among us would NOT choose to flirt with and/or act goofy with our TV crush. <side eyes entire fandom>  I am encouraged by the fact that Dean emerges wearing both plaid and an ascot that maybe he’s crushing on Fred too. (Ascots are inherently bisexual. It’s a fact. Look it up.) Either way, Dean, my dude, you CAN wear both! (And maybe ditch those awful plaid recliners of brotherly loneliness and forever singlehood. Ew. Get a sofa.)

I would also take emotional exposition in the form of a conversation in the live action portion along the lines of “You know it’s not like that in real life, right Cas? You’re not some goofy sidekick.” Could be a prompt to clarify to Cas what he actually is to Dean (not a hammer or weapon) but important for himself.

Tl; dr - the Daphne thing is meaningless. If anything, it will work like the love spell in 13x12 to make Dean’s attraction to a woman (again, an actual caricature of a woman) seem ridiculous. In contrast to…. <fill in the blank. or should I say The Big Empty.>

Shout-out to @naruhearts, with whom I was chatting while I wrote this so elements of our conversation definitely made it in here. 😘

100% agree.

I just watched the episode of Scooby Doo that this is supposed to be based on. I LOVED Scooby Doo as a kid. Much like Dean, I grew up watching it with my little brother. It holds a very sentimental place in my heart.

But man, I kinda forgot how cheesy and ridiculous, exaggerated, and over-the-top everything is. I rolled my eyes I don’t know how many times. A door just opened behind Scooby’s bathtub and he slid down a tunnel. Shaggy and Scooby just piloted a washing machine powered by a fan through the sky. This is slapstick, cheap gags, and physical comedy for kids. It’s a cartoon, and anything Dean does in this episode is going to be equally ridiculous and extremely performative. But I am HERE for the light it can potentially shed on their “real” lives and Dean’s genuine feelings.

… Including that bit about Cas as their sidekick (dog?). That’s mighty interesting.

^^This this, and heh, thanks for the credit @dimples-of-discontent ;)

Like I said in Tink’s post—yeah, Daphne’s literally a drawing (yep @7faerielights). He’s a caricature in a fictionalized reality that’s contradictory to the 3-dimensional (subtextual-not-really-subtextual) truths of actual reality, and it’s as if they’re reducing Dean’s amped-up heterosexuality to just that…a 1-dimensional, super performative, flat and silly cartoon character who has no footing IRL but instead serves as exposition—negative spaces threading together what’s not being said and shown.

And HELL yeah, I want “Cas, man…you ain’t a doggy sidekick. You’re family. (My family)” as much as the next person. Strike down that expendability!! *buzzes*

I want him to flirt with Daphne AND Fred; not this one sided BS. They’re cartoons, it’s harmless. But if he’s gonna hit on the one, hit on them both.

In fact, I’d love it if Fred hit on Dean and we get the dopey, “I can’t believe a guy is hitting on me,” Aaron Bass callback/exposition.

Dabb did say that Dean has strong opinions on these two characters specifically. And then Dean is wearing Fred’s ascot at, what I assume is, the end of the episode when they’re live action again?! 🤔

It’ll be interesting.

stop the hatin, yo: Direct from the "Mystery Girl"

themysterygirlfromnjcon:

Hello! After a lot of driving (a friend reading me posts from the njcon tag and me being appalled by a lot of those posts) I’m making this blog to try and stem the wank a little.

I know this is asking a lot but if you could all please stop posting about this in the “njcon” tag that would be great. Please, please start using the tag “njwank” so that people who would like to hear about this really wonderful con could actually look at the njcon tag.

Now, about the actual question. This is the question I was going to ask:

I’ve loved seeing Dean’s character become more comfortable with himself this season. As a bisexual, I’ve noticed some possible subtext, as seen in Everybody Hates Hitler, that Dean might be coming to accept himself as something other than straight too? I know you’ve said you know Dean better than anyone, so, in your professional opinion, as the preeminent scholar on Dean Winchester, if you see that as a valid interpretation of what’s going on with the character this season.

That’s the question. The whole question. Questions were screened. The woman screening the questions listened to me say that my question is relating to Dean’s development in the show and how he may have changed from s1 to now and then showed that I even had the question written down on my phone. The woman nodded and asked if that was the only thing I’d be asking as I am allowed one question. She then just went through the typical “Don’t ask for hugs, no personal stories, no asking for phone calls, etc.” Please note that nothing was said about anyone asking for questions about sexuality or shipping being banned.

Now here is what happened when I attempted to ask this question. I got as far as the word “bisexual” before the crowd groaned. I proceeded to hold my hand up in a ‘please just wait a second and let me finish’ way and then got as far as the word subtext before the crowd was full on booing and starting to shout a couple things I couldn’t make out. This is when Clif stepped out from behind the curtain looking very intimidating. He said, “Are you really going to ask this question?” to which I responded, “No, I have the question right here on my phone” and I held it up to him for him to read it but he was just like, “Just explain it to me”.
I then stood on my tiptoes to talk directly in his ear because the crowd was still too loud. I kind of stumbled through the explanation of the question as it’s a complex question. I just stepped down after that and Clif just said, “Don’t ask that. Please just thank them and go.”
He did not say this in an angry way. It is Clif’s job to keep things around Jared and Jensen calm and the way the crowd was was not calm at all. This question was just a little too much for the first question and people’s reactions were very, very negative so obviously I wouldn’t be asking the question. I looked up at Clif and told him that I meant no disrespect and to please tell Jared and Jensen that, then immediately grabbed the microphone and said, “I did not mean to be disrespectful at all. Thank you so much.” and then stepped back so that the girl behind me could move to the mic.
Jensen looked confused and said, “I still don’t know what the question was. I’m going to pretend I don’t know what the question was.”
I spoke up at that and quietly sort of yelled towards Jensen that Clif would tell him later. When it was obvious that I wasn’t going to ask my question, he stated that that was his queue to move on and he then took the next question.

I continued to stand there with the next girl in line since she was nervous, not only because she was about to ask a question but also because she was surprised by Clif when he appeared practically out of nowhere to stop me. At this point, the woman who screened my question and Adam (works with Creation) came up looking confused and asked if I got to ask my question to which I replied, “No, I’m just waiting for her to ask her question.” to which they asked the girl to step up to the microphone.

That’s what happened on my end. Here’s how I feel about it.

Jensen wasn’t talking to me when he said anything during this one minute video. I was engaged in trying to explain my question to Clif. Jensen was turned to the crowd, keeping them entertained while this was happening. I didn’t know what he was saying until I got to watch this video after the fact.

  • I am not upset by Jensen trying to keep the crowd engaged
  • I am not upset at Clif for trying to keep the crowd calm
  • I am not upset at Jared for encouraging me to keep going

What I am is annoyed that as soon as I stated that I am bisexual, people groaned. Maybe that’s not something you think is okay. Maybe I could have asked this question in a better fashion. The point is, you should never boo or groan at someone when they state their sexuality. I don’t care if you thought I was going to ask a shipping question. I don’t care what you think about me as a person. The end goal for this question was Jensen going in depth about his characterization of Dean.

The answer to this question didn’t really matter to me personally, I’m going to ship what I’m going to ship no matter what the canon sexuality of a character is. But I know it does matter to a lot of people and that is why I decided on asking this. A friend has been thinking about this question for quite a while and we have been hashing it out since before VegasCon. We were originally going to ask it there, but were too far back in line.
This was a question going to be asked for a very long time now, and so of course I was going to grab the opportunity to ask it. I didn’t think twice of what happened at Misha’s panel as I hadn’t really been online to witness the wank and the atmosphere at the con was very happy.
Having been to many cons (7th con, 5th SPN con), the atmosphere here was very good and I didn’t really take the wank seriously.

Now, it took me a couple hours before I went and talked to Clif (I’ve never been scared of talking to someone ever, but wow Clif is intimidating when he needs to be), right after I nervously said hello, I didn’t get another word out before Clif asked me “How are you?”
After this, I relaxed a bit and apologized for having put him in that position. I really didn’t mean too and didn’t expect that reaction. Clif smiled and just suggested to keep it lighthearted next time (next time) for the first question. He gave me a hug and I asked him to state again to Jared and Jensen that I meant no disrespect and he smiled and said he would.

Overall, what I’m most disappointed about is the fandom’s inability to look past this one incident to really appreciate how wonderful this con was.

ON WHAT PLANET IS IT APPROPRIATE TO BOO WHEN SOMEONE STATES THEIR SEXUALITY?
I don’t care whether you think the question was valid or not. Know why? You didn’t hear it. You cut someone off after they stayed their sexuality.
Foul play.
And you can’t tell me the reaction would have been the same had the crowd not erupted with boos. Sure, the question may have still been stopped, but at least no one would have shamed someone for staring their sexuality.

Okay you know what? I don’t even HAVE to go watch the actual video myself to be able to tell that the crowd wasn’t booing because of her SEXUALITY. They were booing at the obvious direction of the question, which was obviously going to be something about Dean’s sexuality, or the possiblity of him becomin canonically bi.

Which is FUCKING PRECISELY the types of questions that Jensen requested he not be forced to answer. KNOW WHY? Nope. Because he’s already answered this many many many times, and in about as many different ways as there are to communicate this, he’s told us that nope Dean is straight and that is not something he sees (in terms of his own understanding of the character) as changing. Which is incidentally also the view of the show’s original creator, and its many writers and showrunners.

But this hasn’t stopped people from just asking it over and over and over. Why would you keep asking it….. unless you somehow think the answer is going to change if you keep asking it. And Jensen knows he can’t honestly change the answer, and so is never going to give you the answer that you want.

BECAUSE LET’S FACE IT. YOU’RE NOT ASKING IT IN AN OPEN MINDED MANNER, WHERE YOU WANT TO HEAR JENSEN’S THOUGHTS ON DEAN’S SEXUALITY. NO YOU’RE ASKING IT BECAUSE YOU WANT TO HEAR ONE ANSWER AND ONE ANSWER ONLY.

Because let’s examine what happens whenever he HAS answered it in the past, to the best of his knowledge— he has been accused of homophobia. REPEATEDLY.

So can you (the plural you as in any and all who seem so fucking trigger happy at the chance to jump to the worst possible conclusions and assasinate a real living and breathing person’s character) please just step back just for a second, and look  beyond the possiblity that this was about someone’s sexuality, and that it was maybe about the question of Dean’s sexuality, and Jensen’s knowledge that he really couldn’t give you the answer you’re looking for? AND THAT ALL OF THIS HORRID AND CRUEL REACTION WITH THE ATTACKING AND NAME CALLING AND CALLS FOR A SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN AND HARASSING OF HIS BEST FRIEND ON TWITTER IS PRETTY MUCH EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO AVOID??????

1. Still not okay.

for those who can’t bring themselves to watch the vid or who did but couldn’t hear/understand:

the fan’s like ‘hi, I really love your character (bla bla) - I’m bisexual and (starts getting distorted bc there is a loud reaction to this, something about subtext in the show)’

once the crowd has died down, jensen says ‘really? the FIRST question?’

it’s plainly directed at the fan, like damn I was hoping to get through this w/o your queer shit and it was the first question asked (like I don’t want to skew your interpretation but lbr buddy)

then jensen says ‘you want me to take back what I said about the east coast’ or something bc wow just keep going, arsewipe

the fan says ‘I didn’t mean any disrespect’

and it ends with jensen saying ‘I’m going to pretend I don’t know what the question was’

now, if you still wanna put up with this pos that’s your prerogative but like don’t talk to me about him ever

edit: lmao he also says ‘don’t ruin it for everybody now’ and it’s pretty clearly directed towards her, not y’know the whole room who is booing and laughing at her

This is super upsetting.

Does anyone have the video so I can watch this?

It has been a UNANIMOUS decision by Creation Entertainment and ALL of the guests - that after the Misha Collins panel there will be no more SHIP RELATED questions at the SPN Convention Panels.

podajleki:

itsjustjensen:

  • EXPECT IT FROM NOW ON
  • ANY ATTEMPTS WILL BE SHUT DOWN
  • This was stated to people backstage in the VIP area
  • Statement was made by Adam Malin CEO of Creation, Runner of SPN Cons

THIS is a result of BOTH the Misha Collins panel and today’s J2 Panel

- from Cristina (iamsupernaturalsbitch)

I find this really extreme but can’t help but be happy about that. I’ve had enough of shipping related questions and the endless wank and shaming it causes.

I wonder, though. Does this apply to non-Creation cons as well?
