Animal Crossing, The Sims, and Minecraft are all worldwide sensations made by what one would now consider to be AAA companies, and yet, since not one of these games has violence as a core mechanic, each and every one of them has been criticized as not being ‘game-y’ enough.
The fact that the same criticism is levied at so-called ‘casual games’ and ‘casual gamers’ reveals a link between the two: games that don’t include violence as a core mechanic are perceived by the community as being fundamentally more feminine than games that do. Games with women-majority audiences, women-majority casts, and women-majority dev teams are frequently lumped in with this kind of critique. Violence, goes the logic, is what makes a game masculine—and, by extension, being masculine is what makes a video game a video game.
“video games linked to adhd” gee i wonder why ppl with adhd would be drawn to an interactive medium that fully engages your brain and gives your hands something to do at the same time. it is a mystery
I just happen to be doing extended research on this topic and yes, video games are linked to ADHD…in that they are being considered useful teaching and therapeutic tools for people with ADD, ADHD, and ASD because they’re “intrinsically motivating” and help with “social skills, fine motor skills, language skills, reading and writing, and critical thinking”! In fact, they’re theorizing that video games help make these people more social with their peers, not less. (x) Pretty neat!
“Why do you watch people play video games on YouTube, why don’t you just play the game yourself”
Almost 112 million people are currently sitting on their asses watching a bunch of dudes play a sport instead of just playing the sport themselves
This. Its okay if people find entertainment watching other people play sports (or heck watching people cook, watch people play poker, etc), but then people find it weird that people watch others play video games?
Reasons people watch Let’s Plays;
- I want to check out the game before I waste $20
- I don’t think I’m skilled enough to play this game but I want to see how it goes.
- I want the game but it’s on a different console and I’m not spending $400 on a fucking console for one game.
- I find it relaxing and the youtuber makes me happy.
- Because I fucking want to.
