I was oddly curious, so I looked up her most recent novel, published in 2004, a book called Hawkes Harbour.

Turns out, word on the street from . several . different .  sources . is that the book was initially written as a tie-in novel through HarperCollins to the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows (yeah, the one they just remade as a Johnny Depp movie?).

However, it was rejected by the publisher for ‘concerns over language and content’, so she reworked it as an original novel and published it anyway, to a spectacularly lukewarm reception.

Wow.
