I made this after writing a 4k Destiel fic called Mostly in Silence,in which Cas isn’t looking after himself as well as he should be, so Dean offers him a hand, both literally and figuratively.

kinda emotional about how dean’s canonically into all these coded-as-childish things like pranks and anime and rainbow slinkies and junk food but it’s really probably just because he legitimately had his childhood stolen from him and those little indulgences are the best he can get to replace it

But seriously, also don’t think about how the reasons behind all his other “comedic” interests are probably equally as tragic, such as his preoccupation with food stemming from the fact that he frequently went hungry for days as a child (nice job there, John), or that his promiscuity seems to be rooted in a desire for intimacy (holds hands during sex, remembers all his partner’s names, etc.)
I can’t help but feel as though Dean would get all doe-eyed over a stuffed animal toy. like he’d look at it with distrust and maybe disdain while Sam’s around but the second he’s alone he’d probably make it walk along the nearest surface and that makes me feel all the feels
#but no #now all I can think about #is Sam and Dean #working a case at a shitty carnival #like theybdid in season 1 #or was it season two #and Dean playing that game where is you hit the target with a gun #you get a toy #and he ends up wining this really soft choclate brown bear #and he insists that the person working the both keep it #but the jovial old man insists #and so Dean walks around the rest of the day toting this little teddy bear #and at first Sam teases him about it #and Dean gets all prickly and grumbly like he does when he really likes something but doesnt want to admit out of embarassment #his ears going all red #and so the teddy ends up going back to the motel with them, and at first Dean stuffs it in his duffle #but on the second or third night it ends up migrating onto his bed #but dean doesnt cuddle it or anything #because ‘Winchesters don’t need to snuggle teddy bears, dammit! Shut up about it Sam’ #and Sam does #eventually #because they have a case to work #and Dean wont admit it #but the bear is a small comfort #nice to brush his fingers against when he opens his duffle in search of clean clothes #and then when there closing up the case #and helping patch up a distraught little girl and her hysterical mother #and deans fishing the first aid kit out of his bag #the bear falls out with a soft thump on the floor #and the little girl #shes still crying #so Dean gives it to her to hold #and almost isntantly shes soothed #and she clutches it the whole time Sam takes care of here #and when Sam and Dean drop off the girl and her mother at there house Dean sees how shes clutching it #and lets her keep it #hunters dont have teddy bears #men dont need toys #it wont matter #but the whole drive back to the bunker #Dean’s chest is all clenched up #at the thought of the bear with someone else #and its stupid he tells himself to have imprinted on that bear like a baby duck and its mother but he did #and Sam, well Sammy is perceptive and a few days later when Dean come back from the grocery store and walks to his room #ready for a nap #because that hunt was gruseome #and took a lot out of him #and hes not as young as he once was at 40 #he sees a lush brown bear on his bed #with a little thread black nose #and fur that puts the other teddys to shame #and he cant, #did sam?? #he doesnt ask #sam doesnt say anything #and neither does Dean #but that night he holds it close #and sleeps like a baby #and from then on #the bear is always there #nestle between his pillows on his military made bed #and Dean doesnt always sleep with it #but it becomes a comfort to him #seeing it there #just being able to touch something small and soft after a hard day. #to come back to the bunker #and see it waiting for there for him #and on chrismas #months later #after they’ve drunk some of the bunkers finer whiskey #and Dean stumbles to his room #there is his bear #but now #it has a little bow tie #its plaid #a few weeks later Sam finds a small cream colored bear on his bed #its has a little leather jacket

That almost shy yet genuine smile Jensen does whenever he talks about Misha/thinks about Misha, usually looking down and not making any eye contact with people while doing so, even though Misha isn’t currently with him. It often goes together with blushes and a twinkle in his eyes, and sometimes with him fumbling with his clothes or whatever he’s holding in his hands.

Jensen’s ‘Misha laugh’
An incurable affliction which presents acutely in one subject named Jensen Ross Ackles. Symptoms include a partial loss of body strength, invariably accompanied by raucous, explosive laughter, the angled tilting of the upper body, visibly weak knees, shortness of breath, and, occasionally, spinning around on the spot before leaning against a stable object in order to prevent total collapse. May be followed by watering eyes and an inability to look at anything except Dmitri Misha Collins.
From the case evidence reviewed here, I think I can safely rule that the subject, Jensen Ross Ackles, has no obvious aversion to this phenomenon, despite its massive effect on his physical and mental well-being. (Professional opinion is that I think he likes it.)

The show would be called All Natural. It would be nearly identical except everyone wants Sam dead bc people are living too long and not selling their souls to Hell or praying to Heaven. Everyone’s too damn happy and healthy and its’ literally destroying the natural order of things.
I ship Cockles like I’m floating a boat in the ocean itself, so I can’t say this post will be entirely objective (it’s really not at all). there is, however, some input from my mother, who absolutely does not ship the thing.
short answer to your question: Jensen touches Misha unnecessarily all the time.
let me start by providing examples from convention photo ops: here! or here!

the point is, while it’s true that Misha touches Jensen A LOT, Jensen also touches Misha A LOT. between the two of them they average out touching each other A HELLUVA LOT. Jensen’s touches tend to be “accidental” or “I swear I had a purpose with this” most of the time, or he attempts to hide them or make them look jokey, whereas Misha doesn’t conceal that he touches Jensen to reassure him or comfort him or to provoke him. Jensen doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing other than “I must touch him any way I can”.
and he goes out of his way to do it, too. he’ll reach over extraordinary distances just to make a tiny bit of contact, or change direction on the stage, or align himself in exactly the right way so he can put his hands on Misha while a fan is between them. it’s quite impressive the effort he puts into it, really. or maybe it’s effortless. maybe it’s natural for him and he doesn’t even think about it - which makes the fact he does it so often even more interesting.
my mother is determined to sink the good ship Cockles, and assures me that Jensen only touches Misha so much because he’s shy and nervous and he needs security.
well, not to disappoint her or anything, but that is a perfectly valid reason to touch someone. if Jensen’s touching Misha for security… goddamn, that’s adorable.
and calling them security-related touches doesn’t negate the fact that Jensen touches Misha practically all the time if he can get away with it.
I also think they’re slightly possessive touches, particularly in the photo ops, and with the face-stroking. Misha gives himself to other people a lot, he kind of throws his soul at them sometimes, so Jensen does he best to ground him, and grounds himself while he’s at it.
Jensen said at jibcon that he used to hold himself back from fans and not let the love in - and I think these touches are a way to remind both Misha and himself that “we have to stick together and hold tight so we don’t lose ourselves to this friendly but scary, slightly invasive bunch of people”.
what’s classified as a “necessary” touch, though? looking at these images, I’d say the majority of touches outside of the photo ops are not specifically meant to be comforting, reassuring, life-affirming, used to help, aid or abet in any way, nor are they obviously for Misha’s benefit. it rather seems as though Jensen touches Misha just because he likes it and he can.
does that make them necessary? …well, Jensen seems to think so.
I have a word for relationships like theirs (which I’ve experienced personally) which is ‘platonish’. It’s more than platonic, but it’s not a full romantic or sexual relationship. Basically it’s the damnedest most adorable thing ever. Fight me.
