I think he’s being honest when he says he doesn’t play it that way but the directors/producers can set up the scenes to suggest something different without the actor being aware of it
Like in this scene, the director could have told him “When the people walk past check out the old army uniform“ That would make sense to an actor because he knows he’s playing someone who’s excited to be in the past and that’s a style of uniform you’d only see in that time period. But when you add two sexy females walking in the opposite direction, put one in a bold color to draw our eye, it makes our brains go "Wow, he just ignored those pretty laddies because he was busy checking out the guy”
