they have these at some supermarkets in the UK too.

they don’t take your money completely, you’re not paying for the cart/trolley/trundler! you put the money in, you use the cart, then when you’re done, you return it to all the other carts in the outside storage frame thing, and when you push your one in and dock it to the others, the next trolley pushes your coin back out. and you go home with your shopping, and your coin.

it’s a deposit coin, so the shop owners are more sure you’re going to bring the trolley back rather than steal it and take trolley joy rides ~
