This specific issue, about advertising or linking directly to anything that monetizes your work, has nothing to do with whether or not fanfic should be monetized. It’s a legal requirement for the OTW to maintain Nonprofit status under U.S. Law. We’re protecting the Archive’s ability to continue to exist and fight for our rights to write and publish fic at all… Which has nothing to do with fic and everything to do with OTW’s legal and tax status.
They use that nonprofit status to not only run the archive and protect it from litigation by creators who’d otherwise sue fic authors for copyright violations. They use it to give us a place to publish our stories. There’s nothing stopping us from HAVING a patreon, or a ko-fi, or selling our work on other platforms, just SAYING that in words on a Legally Nonprofit website that you can’t do. It’s not about restricting us, it’s about protecting AO3 and the OTW.
posting because yeah okay true. but it bothers me that copyright owners get so bothered about fanfic in the first place anyway yknow?
