ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT HAVING A GOOD DAY:

  • wait until it gets dark and make tea or coffee or hot chocolate, or if it’s too hot outside make yourself a healthy smoothie with your favorite things in it at any point during the day
  • put on your favorite underwear, it helps, trust me, it’s an old family secret (i’m not kidding)
  • if you have a pet, play the “how many things can i stick on you until you move or get mad” game (bonus points if they fall asleep, extra bonus points if a family member sees you and tells you to quit it, extra double ultra points if they join in)
  • rip a peice of paper into as many little pieces as you can
  • go to animeseason.com and click “random anime” until you see one that looks completely ridiculous (or actually good) and watch the first episode. repeat if it sucked or if you get bored halfway through
  • spend at least an hour making a music playlist for how you feel right now and save it for now or when you feel a bad mood rise again
  • curl up in bed and cover yourself with blankets and pillows and put in music and just lay there for a while (sleeping is also good)
  • eat everything
  • drink lots of water
  • it’s okay bad moods don’t last forever!!!!!! i promise!!! you will be yourself soon and there are people who love you very much, don’t be afraid to reach out to them
  • you are lovely
  • eat lots of bananas

here are some more friends

  • i bet there is still a box of crayons in your house somewhere (if not you can get them cheap during back-to-school sales); find them and use them (maybe while watching ridiculous anime)
  • sunshine if you can manage it or just a sun lamp trust me it matters more than you think especially in winter
  • hugs even if they are stuffed animals or your pet or your pillow whatever is on hand
  • if you’ve got a favorite lotion/soap/thing that is scented use it liberally
  • cry if you need, if it doesn’t start by itself or if you don’t want to attract attention put on a sad movie so you have an excuse
  • write this down to pull out on future bad days:
  • it is okay to have a day where you don’t get things done
  • it is okay not to have a reason for feeling bad
  • taking care of yourself is a worthwhile use of time
  • if you still don’t feel better it is not your fault (and it is okay to ask for help)

If someone tells you a racist, sexist or homophobic joke, don’t get mad at them. Just tell them you don’t get it. Keep telling them you don’t get it until they are forced to explain why women/minorities/homosexuals are stupid/etc.

Then just walk away.

This is actually the best possible reaction, because this way you don’t just get them mad, you get them to think

If someone ever tells you a certain song is important to them you should turn it up and lay on your bed and close your eyes and really listen to it even if its 10 minutes long because at the end you will know that person much better I think

The Best Advice I Ever Got From A Writer…

Rebloggable by request…

neil-gaiman:

Mr. Gaiman, I was wondering something. Have you ever talked on the topic of enjoying (or at least trying to enjoy) the work of an author or artist who you dislike/hate, or just disagree with in many respects in real life? For instance, I love Ender’s Game, and I have a copy of Card’s guide to writing fantasy and sci-fi, but I find the man’s politics to be completely hateful and revolting, to say the least.

I’ve talked about it a few times. For example,

I said

If I were only allowed to read or enjoy art or listen to music made by people whose opinions and beliefs were the same as mine, I think the world would be a pretty dismal sort of a place. I love the work of many creators who self-avowedly believe or believed things that I consider to be “fairly wretched”, not to mention wrong-headed, lunatic, irresponsible or simply wrong. Worse yet: there are artists, actors, songwriters, authors, whose work I love, like or admire and who, biographers or historians tell us, actually did things that were utterly reprehensible. And worse even than that, there are all those things by Anonymous, who could have been or thought or done, well, anything, and we’ll never know…

Ezra Pound was a fascist, an antisemite on a level that makes the Aryan Nation seem wishy washy, a traitor (or at best, a collaborator), and I’m very glad I got to read his poetry, and appreciate it and learn from it. I could list dozens more without breaking a sweat. Most, probably all, human beings get to do awful things and believe things that other human beings think they should be burned for believing, and they get to do and believe wonderful things too, and artists, writers, musicians, creators, actors, are nothing if not human beings.

The art isn’t the artist, the poem isn’t the poet; trust the tale, not the teller.

(The sad flip-side is I’ve met people — writers and artists — over the years who I liked immediately, with whom I found myself agreeing on everything to do with art and aesthetics so closely that we might have shared the same head, people whose world-views were pretty much mine, whom I’d talk with far into the night and whom I parted from excited that I’d met them, looking forward to nothing more than reading their writing or looking at their art… and then I would find what they had done, and, at least as far as my taste was concerned, the books would be uninteresting, the drawings ugly or clumsy. And in an odd way, that hurts more than liking the work of someone who behaved badly, or thought in a way that I consider offensive or wrong.)

And someone just wrote and asked if that meant that I thought that you shouldn’t ever stop reading someone whose opinions or actions you find noxious. No, I don’t think that at all: I think you should do whatever you think is right.

whenever you start to think or say something negative about yourself just imagine one of your favorite characters busting into the room out of nowhere to grip your shoulders and look you directly in the eyes while saying “that’s not true” and whenever you try to argue they just list off something positive about you and kiss your forehead or cheek then in your momentary daze and confusion they literally pick you up and carry you off to get ice cream

You can be body-positive and still have preferences.

You can be a feminist and still love men.

You can be sex-positive without being interested in casual sex.

People seem to forget that the core principle of all of these is as simple as not being an asshole.

when i was in 8th grade i liked this boy so i pickpocketed him and stole his green day wallet and the next day i brought it back to him and i was like “omg i found this on the ground here u go” and we were friends from then on

so basically the moral of the story is if u ever want someone to notice u commit a criminal act on them and u will be friends maybe try kidnapping their pets or something
