What is Angelhawke?

(this reply contains minor spoilers, most of which are also covered in the story summary, so don’t worry)

Angelhawke is a Dean/Castiel fanfiction based on the movie Ladyhawke, which I wrote for last year’s Dean/Cas Big Bang. The story is 418,000 words long, set in a fantasy/medieval alternative universe. Sam is a thief who escapes from prison, and he gets rescued by a stranger named Dean. Dean tells Sam that he’s lost his lover, Cas. It starts off looking like established relationship, because it is - but then it goes into flashback mode, and Dean recounts from the very beginning, and we see Dean meet Cas for the first time. Cas is a fallen angel, imprisoned in a tower, and Dean helps him escape. They very slowly develop feelings for each other, and the story goes from there, hopping back and forth between Dean telling the story to Sam, and the actual story. It’s later revealed that Dean has been cursed to become a wolf at night, and Castiel becomes a hawk during the day, so they can never see each other. Sam, and other characters, all play a pivotal part in bringing them back together, and completing their family.

The story can be found on Livejournal, or on AO3. (also available as a PDF from both links)

Hi Almaasi! I just wanted to say I'm in the middle of reading Angelhawke and I can't stop thinking about it. It's my new all time favorite fic and THANK YOU! For writing such an amazing fic. You're an awesome writer.

I have a question about Angelhawke! :) I absolutely love the story, but in retrospect is there anything about it that you would change? I'm not asking you to change it, just curious!

Aside from the formatting? Yeah, I’d change a few things. I’d explain what Gordon was doing the whole big battle fiasco (I figure he was sitting up in the church tower with Christian, shooting people in the head). I’d explain some parts better - like the fact Meg’s curse was to turn them into animals because Cas told her he could control animals with his power (and she tested that when she turned him into a bluebird), and she figured she’d have total control if Dean was a creature rather than human. I’d make Death less of a deus-ex-machina, (even though I kinda like him because of that, ‘cause he’s flawed and pretty useless most of the time).

One thing I wouldn’t change is the length. It’s long as fuck, but I think it needed that length to properly explore everything that was there to be explored. Yeah, the length bores some people, and it drags on if readers ain’t got their heart in it - but for those people the story really captures, I think it’s worth it.

I’d probably change loads of other things too, but really, I’m quite happy with how it is now. I doubt I’d change anything at all in the future, except some typos here and there (I’m compiling a list to fix when I finally get around to fixing the formatting).

Thanks for your question! It’s nice to reminisce. I can’t believe I posted this story a whole year ago… damn

No but why is Angelhawke by almaasi not the most famous Destiel AU of all time? This is hands down the best fanfic I have ever read in my whole life. I can’t stop reading- the tension and the characters and the story line and the language and the world and UGH I JUST CAN’T GO AND READ IT NOW

carrionofmywaywardson:

“Would you…” Dean trailed off, eyes darting away for a half-second, then flashing back. “Would you still feel the same way about me if I was… if I looked different?” (Angelhawke by almaasi)

Elmie, there are no words that could sufficiently describe how much I adore your fic. It’s just… wonderful. Thank you for writing it <3

I can attest to all of this.

aw yeah~

You may also want to have a nearby computer keyboard. I found keysmashing to be rather therapeutic, both for the painful feelsy parts and the fluffy ooey gooey parts.
