the ritz scene, i think, is less about crowley than aziraphale’s growth. crowley remains relatively unchanged: he’s still a fallen angel who doesn’t want to kill kids, he’s still a sarcastic demon who creates major annoyances rather than death, and he’s still in love with aziraphale. there was never any doubt to this. crowley is the one who, from the very beginning, sought out aziraphale’s company. he suggested they run away together bc if they died, at least they’d die together. they’re on the same side. in the ritz, crowley stares at his love softly, absolutely enamored– not a new development.
aziraphale, on the other hand, is the one has been pushing against their friendship. he knows they’re friends, he knows he’s in love, but he refuses to admit it to anyone, even himself. he was never comfortable in their relationship, bc what if? what if they got in trouble, what if crowley was killed bc of him, what if what if what if? aziraphale is the one who has been putting the wrench in what’s between them, no one else. he’s the wild card who said they didn’t have a side, they weren’t friends. but here, at the ritz, after finally choosing a side (humanity and crowley), aziraphale is at ease with their relationship. this is the first time they’ve been together that aziraphale is comfortable. instead of sitting straight, staying away, he’s leaning in. & that’s so important
So it’s totally fine for Sam to be alone with Cas for an episode
But the moment Dean comes back Cas is nowhere in sight
The writers literally have no idea how to handle Dean and Cas anymore
they don’t even say where he is it’s just kind of like
I’ve been reading a book about screen writing and there’s a chapter about ‘Scene’ and the author basically says that if you know your characters well enough and you know the time, place and purpose of your scene, then the action should pretty much write itself as the characters will just start behaving in the appropriate way. The problem the SPN writers have with Dean and Cas is that they have crafted the characters so beautifully, and set up their relationship so well, that no matter what time or place or purpose a scene has, all they want to do is gravitate towards each other until they are right up in each other’s personal space, stare intently into each other’s eyes and start sharing their intimate thoughts, as a prelude to playing passionate tonsil hockey. It’s either that, or they want to start yelling ‘I love you, you dumb son of a bitch’ while punching each other into unconsciousness, as a prelude to passionate tonsil hockey. The writers are screwed because, for reasons known only to them, the programme team don’t seem to want Dean and Cas to get together, but by this point there really isn’t any plausible reason why those two characters would be in the same room for more than five minutes and NOT get together. So the only solution is for the writers to keep them apart. And that’s getting increasingly difficult too, because the characters don’t want to be apart. Basically, the writers just need to stop fighting what the characters want and just let Destiel happen. Because that’s what these two characters have been building towards for years.
after sticking lentils on canvas for 8 hours MY BRAIN IS STILL DOING THE GLUE-SWIPE MOTION AND SPRINKLING LENTILS. I CAN’T MAKE IT STOP. I SEE LENTILS WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES
