The Bela Effect

I call this the ‘Bela Effect’ because it was the first example of it. The Bela Effect is basically when there is a character in the show that has a relationship with both brothers, but the relationship with Dean overshadows the one with Sam, despite Sam’s desire to bond with that character.

Bela Talbot- Whenever there is an episode with Bela, the sexual tension between her and Dean is played up. There is plenty of flirtatious animosity between the two of them, and even a proposition for angry sex. But then we are shown that Sam definitely has feelings for Bela. Whether they’re purely sexual or not is up for debate, but they’re definitely present. But Bela’s focus is always on Dean.

Jo Harvelle- Jo is a friend of the Winchesters, and is implied to have a serious crush on Dean. When Meg possesses Sam, she visits Jo and (as Sam) tries to initiate contact and, when rebuffed by Jo, gets defensive and attacks by claiming that Dean doesn’t feel anything for her. You can argue that this was just Meg trying to cause a little chaos and Sam didn’t have feelings for Jo, but demons usually use their meatsuit’s feelings against them. I’m guessing that Sam wanted to be closer to Jo, maybe not romantically, but that relationship was overshadowed by her relationship with Dean. (Ex. notice how in Abandon All Hope, Sam only holds Jo’s hand briefly before her suicide mission, but Dean shares a very intimate moment with her.)

Pamela Barnes- It was a running gag that Pamela had a thing for Sam’s ass. She was very flirty with both of them and even (jokingly) suggested a threesome with them. But in Dark Side of the Moon, Pamela kisses Dean and says “Just how I imagined.” So she’s thought about Dean in a sexual (maybe even romantic) way before, but not Sam? Even though while she was alive, she came onto both of them in equal measure. In fact, I’m pretty sure she came onto Sam more than Dean.

Castiel- Sam has, on multiple occasions, shown respect for Castiel. He’s shown gratitude and gestures of friendship. He’s even defended Cas from Dean’s anger on occasion. I won’t make a list, but ask some Sassy shippers or go through the tag and I’m sure you’ll find plenty of examples. But then, Castiel always seems to favor Dean. That’s not to say Castiel hasn’t shown his affections for Sam, but the relationship with Dean is always more prevalent.

Charlie Bradbury- Sam and Charlie have a very sweet relationship and they both clearly care about each other very much. They’ve even bonded over their love of Harry Potter on screen. It’s safe to say that Charlie is close to both Sam and Dean….but who does Charlie say “I love you” to at the end of an episode? Who gives her a tender kiss? Dean.
