When you told Jensen to draw on Misha however he liked, expecting him to draw something funny, and instead he says that Misha would look cool if he looked like this and then writes ‘Yum’. And then you have to concentrate on keeping a normal face
Okay….I have to ask- why is the “yum” a different color than his signature? It looks more like the “team” in their back. Also, why does the m in yum look exactly like the m in team?
I guess that’s one way to get notes…..
I have to ask- why do you have to add pointless comments? If you really want proof then maybe next time I’ll just fly you up to Vancouver and we’ll ask Jensen together, then you won’t have to pipe in on the post with useless commentary
@actually-richard-speight are you serious? do you not see the glare from the light that fades out over Jensen’s signature, making that entire portion of the photo look different from every other part? that’s the only reason the “yum” looks different.
also I saw it in person right after it was signed and yes, it’s real, so kindly fuck off
Strap in (or strap on, readers preference) because this is going to get long.
In response to this interaction between this (I’m sure other wise normally pleasant human) person @actually-richard-speight and my lovely wife @winchester-reload I wanted to bring some things to light.
@actually-richard-speight Here’s another angle of it without the glare for your whiny ass. Also, if you’re implying that Jensen and I have similar handwriting, then I’ll have the complement. In case you were curious, here’s another sample of my handwriting, for science
I’m not saying you’re Jensen. I’m saying you, along with many people from tumblr, have created a fake post in order to get notes. The only issue is that someone actually called you on it, forcing you to resort to sarcasm. There’s a simple solution- don’t lie for notes. @winchester-reload
@winchester-reload and there’s that sarcasm again. The greatest way to say “I have no defense but I want to look like I didn’t give up.” I’ve used it too many times myself.
@actually-richard-speight princess, if it makes you feel better to call BS on the post, that’s your prerogative. idgaf what you think about it. But sarcasm is 125% of my personality, so if you wanna chat with me, you’re just gonna have to bathe in it.
The human brain is a magnificent thing. You know how they say that yawning is contagious? Well there is a small area of the brain in the hypothalamus called the suprachiasmatic nucleus that controls our circadian cycles. That small part of the brain is now believed to also influence unconscious mimicry behavior, also sometimes known as the chameleon effect or mirroring.
You see or hear someone yawn, or even hear someone say the word, and most people will also yawn without thinking or controlling it. Same for itching.
Now keep that unconscious behavior in mind, will you?
Great, thanks.
Now I’d like to direct your attention to this article. Now it is only one article. Oh wait. No. Here is another for you right here. The first one is right there in your face and talks directly about subconscious mimicry, the second I will admit you have to read a bit to finally get to the subject matter we are talking about right now.
But basically they both tell you that we as humans (animals in general honestly) have a tendency to mimic the behavior, mannerisms, facial expressions, even speech patterns of those around us. It is a way for us to balance out the feeling of being in the “outgroup” and to get others to like and accept us. There is no research that says that this cannot extend into handwriting as well.
Now because I am unaware of your education background I want to make sure that I also provide something with more solid research. That can be found atthis link here.
Here are some main points that I would like to address:
It is important to realize that, in studies on unconscious human mimicry, mimicry is just a by-product in the interaction. The participants are focusing on something completely different (e.g. working on a picture describing task (Chartrand & Bargh 1999) or judging advertisements (Van Baaren et al. 2003)) and they are unaware of the behaviour, the mimicry and the fact that the researchers may in fact be interested in something else other than the irrelevant task the participant is working on …. In sum, the type of imitation we have researched most extensively is unconscious, peripheral mimicry.
Now in the case presented to us of Jensen signing a piece of art with “yum”(something that may be considered “Cockles” and others may not like it therefore trying to discredit but not disprove the story behind it), let us consider that Jensen is usually super busy at these conventions. That is not an assumption, that is a fact that anyone who has been to one can attest to. So Jensen is focused on many things, he is talking to the person standing before him for the autograph, he is focused on looking at the art presented to him to be signed, and he wants to express something in regards to the art.
So he writes the word “yum”. Now if you take a look at the art in question it is very close to the “M” in Team. Thanks to cognitive heuristics that allow us to process and function in a multitude of ways without consciously thinking about it, Jensen may have mimicked that letter when he wrote that.
The Chameleon effect (Chartrand & Bargh 1999) did show that there is an automatic human tendency to mimic behaviour and mannerisms. However, subsequent research revealed we don’t imitate everyone all the time.
Just to point out that yes, it is not always mimicked.
Another important social moderator of mimicry is our evaluation of the characteristics of our interaction partner. When we like a person, or his/her ethnicity, or group membership or social status, we will imitate that person to a greater extent compared to when we do not positively evaluate those characteristics.
I really could use this one to give logical reasoning like Jensen liked the drawing of Misha/Cas that way and even commented on it so he mimicked the letter without thinking. (There is also name-letter effect (where we show preference to letters in our own name or those of people we like/love/admire) but I don’t have proof this is the case (the M obviously referring to Misha) so I will let it slide). But let’s face it I think that we all understand why I am pointing this one out and I will give a link to visuals references for this in a minute. (bold emphasis is mine by the way)
In sum, there is ample evidence for social moderation of mimicry, namely, the human nonconscious tendency to imitate. We do not just imitate everybody all the time. We imitate more when: we feel connected to others, others are important, we want to affiliate with others, we are socially oriented or have an assimilative cognitive style. Furthermore, in addition to these more general mimicker characteristics, the characteristics of the mimickee also moderate mimicry. A priori evaluations of those targets predict our subsequent mimicry.
I’m gonna wrap this up in a minute but I want to focus on this last one here. This is the final paragrah of the 3rd point in the article. I’m stopping here because this is already long enough and you have the link to the article and can go read it yourself if you really want to.
Take a look at the words I put in bold. If you believe that the actors at the conventions wish to connect with their fans than you can certainly believe that any of those actors are capable of mimicry of their fans in order to connect without even thinking about it. These actors have been doing these things for years and it is no longer something they really have to think about. They just do. It has pretty much become a second nature to them.
If you couldn’t bring yourself to read all of this, maybe at least read this tl;dr:
Here is the piece of art in question:
Here is a piece of art that was signed by Jensen and he WROTE ON IT. Take a look at not only the M but the U. (This is the art of @deanandhiscas and the post for it is right here, please go give them some love because it is a beautiful piece and the original post and artist deserves all the love for it)
If you are still insistent that my wife is a liar and falsified Jensen’s writing in order to get likes and reblogs (which she wasn’t even the OP and I can guarantee my wife is awesome enough that she doesn’t need to lie in order to garner attention), I can’t stop you. Just bring facts to the table before you try to discredit someone simply because you are not a fan of the content that was posted.
Now remember that point I made about when we like someone we tend to imitate that person? Check out this link of pictures. I’m also positive that others can contribute pictures or gifs of facial expressions, and mannerisms as well.
i can’t believe i did this but here we go
the first gif is for the ‘m’ and the second is for the ‘y’
SPN Parallels: Dean wiping his eyes with the back of his hand
Dean […] is grumpy and slow to wake up, stretching and creaking and rubbing his eyes with the back of his hands,
a waking-up gesture that is so compulsive, so who he is, that it shows
up repeatedly, and it makes him look either like he is 6-years-old or,
well, like an odalisque.
Rubbing your eyes with the heel of your palms is what cowboys and
gunslingers do. A tough gesture, you don’t care if you get a little
grime in your eyes if you’re a tough guy. Cliche, but true. I have a
hard time imagining Clint Eastwood rubbing his eyes with the backs of
his hands. It looks like a child-like “boo-boo” type of gesture. It’s
palms-facing-out, which is vulnerable. Look for it from Ackles. It shows
up repeatedly. It’s one of those gestures that beautifully undercuts
the sincerely tough and bossy and aggressive persona of Dean Winchester.
When Jensen does a panel with Jared, he usually stares out at the audience while Jared is talking. He does look over at him from time to time, but for the most part it’s more like he’s sitting at his side, shoulder to shoulder, in Winchester Solidarity. They’re a unit, they’re a team, and when Jared speaks Jensen treats it like he’s speaking for both of them.
It’s wonderful, I love it.
But when Jensen does a panel with Misha, he stares at Misha with the awestruck smile most of the audience is wearing at the same time. Like he’s thinking “look at this adorable goober”, and he’s hanging on to every word. He’s one of us, one of the fans, and can’t wait to hear what kind of crazy crap Misha’s going to say next.
So I don’t know how to make gifs, and I CERTAINLY have no business writing meta, but I wanted to share my thoughts with you all regarding the end of J2’s panel with Misha.
Now I’m sure everyone was just as starved for Cockles interaction as I was, and upon first glance that whole bit about there not being enough rooms at Misha’s place and Jared torturing Misha was just chaotic hilarity at its finest. It wasn’t until I watched it a second time, and then a third, (maybe a forth) that I realized maybe it wasn’t all puppies and rainbows after all.
I think it all started with Jensen’s “cutting the fat” line. Now, we all know he was joking. Picking on Misha, that’s what they do. No biggie, right? Misha got on the stage and he hugged Jared while Jensen pulled in an extra chair for him. Then as he made his way over to the chair, it seemed like Jensen was anticipating a hug but Misha just slid right past him. Not even looking at him, if I recall correctly. This is when Jensen starts to worry a little. So what does he do? He offers Misha some “apple juice” as an apology. I’ve seen different speculations that Misha rejected Jensen’s offer, but my first impression at trying to read Misha’s lips was that he said “Yep” and then something else maybe? Jensen might have mumbled something before turning away to get a new glass for Misha. (A cup that he drank out of anyway, mind you)
When Jensen hands him the drink it’s very cold and there’s a lack of eye contact between them. When Jensen sits down again, he says something to Misha, which, again, I read Misha’s lips as saying “Yep”. My shipper heart wants to believe it was something along the lines of “You know I was kidding right?” But I really couldn’t tell from the video. Whatever it was, Jensen actually looked very happy afterwards.
I really had to look between the lines to see something else going on.
For the rest of the story, Jared and Misha are totally in sync making each other cry from laughter, while Jensen looks a little left out… So he tries to joke his way back into the mix. At one point, when Jensen said they just decided to stay up all night because of the lack of sleeping space, Misha looked over at him. But as soon as Jensen turned towards him, Misha looked away and Jensen’s expression showed disappointment. Again, it was so hard to spot with all the laughter going on, but I sensed a little tension between these two. At the end when J2 have to leave, Jensen walks off the stage without giving Misha a second look. Hurt feelings, perhaps?
Now this could be total BS because we know Misha has been dealing with their playful abuse for years now, and I don’t think he’s the type to be easily offended by it. But something just seemed OFF to me.
Please feel free to speculate on this terrible meta.
“The more concerned we are with our looks, the more it indicates our desire to show off and attract and the timing with which this happens is extremely important because it indicates to us the purpose of the adjustments and whom the fixes are meant for.” - BLP chapter on courtship signals
This is so cute. He is adjusting his collar and buttons and smoothing his shirt, which are classic grooming and preening gestures. Jensen wants to look good for Misha because he cares what Misha thinks of him and he wants Misha to find him attractive because he desires Misha.
