“about ray” isn’t going to be fucking good don’t watch it

In case anyone has hopes, here let me help destroy them.

1. It’s a cis girl playing a trans boy. That’s transphobic

2. The director constantly misgenders Ray, calling him a girl and using she/her/hers pronouns.

3. Actual quote from the director, Gaby Dellal: "The part is a girl and she is a girl who is presenting in a very ineffectual way as a boy…She’s just a girl who is being herself and is chasing the opportunity to start hormone treatment. So to actually use a trans boy was not an option because this isn’t what my story is about.“

4. This movie is not for trans people. It is for cis people to pretend to care, while exploiting and making a mockery of us, and to profit off of the violence perpetuated against the trans community.

5. Another quote, incase you don’t quite believe 4. From Dellal again: “I would never discriminate against a trans kid or actor coming up to audition, but in this day and age in cinema, where it’s almost impossible to raise the financing, unfortunately we have to have some people that mean a certain amount of money.”

6. Just read this whole interview because it’s nothing but misgendering, transphobic garbage.

Trans man here. This post is entirely subjective and, to be honest, has no bearing on the film itself.

1. That is not transphobic. First off, trans men may not want to play a character who is pre-transition as it may trigger their dysphoria. I certainly would not want to. Laverne Cox’s cis twin brother played her pre-transition self on OITNB. Additionally, as you pointed out in 5, the need for big name actors and actresses to make a movie get off the ground is also important. These days, you need big names to get funding and audiences, that is the sad truth. You also have no idea if trans people did or did not audtion for the role.

2/3. The director’s comments I have already covered, but I will repeat my stance. It is possible they simply phrased what they wanted to say incorrectly, but even if that is the case, that does not reflect on the movie itself. I have viewed the trailer and I saw nothing wrong with it. Stop preemptively judging the film based on these comments - the film has potential and I have faith in it.

4. You have no proof of this, you are just projecting your subjective opinions as fact. Stop it.

5. I already covered this in 1, but I will repeat, you need big names nowadays. Independent films, even with large budgets, never go far without big names.

6. I actually did read that very thing you linked, yesterday. I still support the film for the reasons I stated.

For masked-fox-creations and everyone reblogging this, I have one thing for you to think about.  If you want a perfect trans movie and refuse to see any film about transness until a perfect, flawless, and non-problematic film comes out, you will be dead before that happens. By boycotting this movie, you will send the message that trans films are not a good source of revenue and destroy any chances for future trans films for a long time. Yes, this film may not be perfect. Yes, it may have some problematic moments or aspects. But it is a necessary first step, and boycotting it will only cause Hollywood to stop any future trans movies. This isn’t the Stonewall film where the movie itself has significant issues, all your complaints are subjective or don’t reflect on the movie itself.

I am a trans man, and I still support this film.
