Because Metatron was right, Castiel would do anything, even stop the world from spinning, for Dean Winchester. Metatron has said the three words that Castiel has feared hearing more than anything else in the world, “He’s dead too”. If Dean is dead, Castiel may as well be dead. Castiel is lost and alone and upset and heartbroken. Dean Winchester is gone.
And here he thinks that well, if he can’t have what he wants, at least he can still help bring Metatron down. Look at the third gif. At least Metatron doesn’t get to win.

ok im going to be honest here and i think a lot of people wil agree with me- demon!dean is fucking hot. yes, i do think so like fuck yes! but-BUT i dont think actual canon demon!dean is good!! i mean reading about demon!dean in fics or seeing fanart hell yeah hell yeah thats hot but the fact that he’s actually going to become something he hates-something he’s been hunting his entire life,no.i dont like that.i think the idea of demon!dean is hot,not actual demon!dean.

Honestly the most emotional part of that episode? Not the bro moment (which was actually nice and equal and clear good on you Carver). Not Gadreel’s death. Not Dean’s death. Not Cas finding out Metatron had killed him, watching the scribe carelessly wave around a sword covered in Dean’s blood.
“I just want to be an angel,” Cas said as they locked Metatron away. Such a small, throwaway line, but… why? What can angels do that he can’t right now?
Fly? Because the only place he wants to be is the bunker, but he can’t get there right now.
Heal? Because maybe there’s some slim chance he could save Dean. ”Ultimately it was all about saving one human, right?” It took 23 episodes, but you finally figured him out, Metatron. And you pounced on the chance to ruin him.
However… Flying and healing are the obvious abilities. What’s another thing angels do that Cas can’t? That almost every angel did only a few years ago? They don’t have to feel the way Cas does. And to someone who believes he’s just lost the man who had become his purpose, to be numb would be a kindness right now.
