The Hunter Games Initial Thoughts

proxy-1:

I’ll just preface this by saying I’m very very tired and so likely missed the bulk of what they’re is to to see in this ep, but here goes anyway.

1. Cas can feel longing, not just addressed prayers. THE DESTIEL IMPLICATIONS. Every time Dean has missed Cas, every time he even THOUGHT about praying, all of it, Cas could not only hear it but feel it. I am honestly still struggling to process this information.

2. Dean starts listing off Metatron’s crimes, and what is the first - the very first thing that he says? Stealing Cas’s grace. Once again he has that on his all time list of greatest Metatron crimes, just like he did in 9.23. It’s a pretty huge sticking point for him, and you better believe that Metatron has taken note.

3. Cas texting Dean, because he likes texting, and let’s be honest: who would Cas ever text. He got his liking for it through texting Dean, and he likes emoticons, and you just know that he’s sent Dean every single one, and Dean probably just sits there grinning at what a dork his angel of the lord really is. And dare I say it: longing, and so Cas keeps doing it because he can sense the reaction.

4. There was a nice bit of symbolism with Sam being unable to break the door down, but Cas using his grace to break through so they could both get to Dean. To me that’s just further reinforcing that in all likelihood is going to need to be a true TFW effort to finally get Dean, if not cured, then at least into a position where he can deal with it.

5. Which brings us to Metatron’s statement: the river ends at the source. Which begs the question: is the source of Dean’s version of the mark Cain, or Lucifer? And what is Metatron’s involvement in it all? How much, exactly, does he truly know? Suppose we’ll be finding out in a few weeks.

6. Sam taking about the powerful force. He wasn’t there when Dean found out how Cain found the strength to live beyond the influence of the mark. And Sam is right: part of that powerful force does have to be Dean. It didn’t matter how hard Sam & Cas fight, if Dean doesn’t find his own strength and fight internally it won’t make a difference. But that’s only part of it. We all know what the force that helped Cain was: it was love. Loving someone, and even more importantly, believing that he was worthy of that having that love returned, and accepting it. And Dean won’t be able to fight the mark himself until he can reach that stage. He’s already got someone who accepts him, who loves him unconditionally, and who only wants him to be rid of the thing controlling him, just the same way Colette loved Cain. It remains to be seen if Dean will be able to acknowledge that though. He has taken that first step though, when he told Cole the people who love him pulled him back. Now he just needs to believe it.

7. I love Rowena. I have no doubt that Crowley knows what she’s up to, but damn do I love seeing someone manipulating people the way Crowley does.

8. We now know where Crowley’s bones are. Assuming he’s telling the truth, and they really are his bones, he could be setting himself up for a world of hurt. I’m really hoping this isn’t going to be another dropped B-RL plot point.

9. I liked Claire. She couldn’t go through with killing Dean, because at heart she really is a good person. She’s had a fucked up life that isn’t going to be getting any better any time soon, but she is doing what she can with what she has.

10. Cas was just awesome, ok? Total bamf mode. His given for Dean and Claire, his friendship with Sam, it’s all just awesome.

I’m sure on rewatch there’ll be a lot more but I’ve already spent to long mentally replaying it all. It was an awesome episode, did lots for Destiel in particular, and was a lot better than I had expected.

The river ends at the source.

i hope all of the episodes that follow this are team free will just going to desperate lengths to figure out how to fix dean

but i’m now forever going to believe that sam was tryna be like “you told me cain keeps bees. LET’S DO THIS”

Wow, the new info on angel praying make every Dean Cas parting scenes 200% sadder, including the whole s06. And when Dean kicked Cas out of the bunker, for the first time in his life, Cas was unable to detect whether or not Dean wanted him in his life anymore. Other times, angel Cas knew that in one way or another, Dean won't completely push him away. Human Cas didn't have that certainty. He did't ask Dean why he's being kicked out because he was afraid this was the end.

elizabethrobertajones:

I can’t believe you’d say something like this to me. I thought we were friends.

Because now I’m just thinking about Cas looking up startled when Dean approaches him in 9x06, and he’s taken off-guard because he’s been so used to knowing where Dean is at any moment.

Maybe he didn’t even fully realise it himself: it properly started in Purgatory. Knowing where Dean was every second of the day just became a second nature, a part of the torment of that place. But it didn’t go away even when they were out and Dean technically stopped searching for him. Cas came to rely on it - he could tell you where Dean was from the other side of the universe.

After Dean vocalised that desperate last “I need you” at the crypt Cas felt that longing spike so hard in a wordless, unspoken prayer, and somewhere far off where he was free to think for himself he wondered if the prayer Dean wasn’t saying had changed somehow from merely wondering where Cas was. He was already right there in the room with Dean - how could he be subconsciously reaching out for Cas to be any closer? And then Dean gripped Cas’s sleeve and Cas cupped his face and for the first time that longing cut off as Dean slowly realised that Cas was only healing him, not killing him…

But this is a different lack of that longing: Dean is right there smiling at Cas, and Cas has no idea how Dean feels. When Cas was darting all around the country on his Biggersons coffee crawl he could pinpoint constantly where Dean was in relation to him from halfway across the continent, every time, instantly. Cas practically navigated by it.

He could close his eyes right now and Dean wouldn’t even be there.

“Do you have any idea how hard it was? When I fell to earth, I didn’t just lose my powers. I –”

castielcomets:

sooooo it’s totally canon that cas likes to text dean with lame emoticons and he probably sends lots of dumb pictures and ridiculous selfies and urges dean to send some back and dean is just super grumpy and embarrassed by him but does it anyway because they’re stupid idiots in love and dean secretly saves all the pictures and messages that cas sends him because cas is SO CUTE

jennilah:

yup every fucking fic or whatever where Cas is like

Cas: :)
Cas: =)
Cas: 0:-) look its me
Cas: :o) Dean look at this one
Dean: stop
Cas: :-O
Cas: =’(

is now completely reasonable and within the realms of canon and i will hold that very near and dear to my heart

Alright friends, I wanna talk about doors. Specifically doors of the locked variety. We have seen several of them this season in particular, and it always seems to be Sam who finds himself on the other side.

In 10x03 and 10x07 Sam found himself in positions of needing to lock monsters behind doors to keep them from attacking. He tried his hardest to get through to them but was unsuccessful both times. The doors, however, eventually did open. Dean chopped his down with a hammer, while Elle never made it out of hers alive.

Again in 10x10 we find Sam with another locked door, only this time it is he who is locked out and trying with everything he has to get to Dean on the other side. As was the case with trying to get through to demon!Dean and Elle, he is unsuccessful in breaking down the door. I wonder how long he would have stood there kicking before trying to find the proper tool to break down it down? He knows what needs to be done, but the methods he applies are all wrong…

Let us then appreciate the significance of Cas, who once upon a time last season needed Sam’s assistance with getting through a door because he didn’t have the words required to solve Metatron’s riddle, being the one who does have the necessary tools this time to get through to Dean. He uses his grace, his precious, fading grace to blast through the door without hesitation.

I’m not saying this is incredibly important symbolism that is going to come into play later on but… no wait that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Cas: There may be another way
Dean: ...
Sam: ???
Cas...
Dean: ???
Cas: ...True love's first kiss
Sam: !!!
Dean: ?!?!?!
Cas: Dean we have to make out sorry I don't make the rules

Cas’s door opening game has definitely improved since “I don’t got this” (10x01)
