I’m a dumb idiot who needed Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria to hit in the same month to realize Kaijus in Pacific Rim were a metaphor for climate change and hurricanes and, like, the movie isn’t even subtle about it
there’s a very long tradition in monster movies (and kaiju eiga if you wanna be specific) of monsters as allegory for natural disasters, pollution and climate change. Godzilla vs Hedorah is a really good example where the enemy is literally sentient pollution, and pacific rim does the same thing it did in taking widesweeping environmental issues and linking it DIRECTLY to the appearance of these monsters, both with the above examples and newt’s dialogue after he drifts with the kaiju brain and points out that climate change and co2 emissions means we practically terraformed our planet for these aliens to come BACK and take over. Monster movies are a LOT of different things and can be very silly and absurd but they can also be built around very serious and specific messages about the condition of our planet, and in many ways messages about human impact on the environment has been built into modern monster movies since the very beginning (looking at the impact the original ‘godzilla’ had on pop culture and monster movies the world over)(its also worth noting that this probably extends into many other monster films and franchises from many other countries that i havent seen)
reblogging this again because this is from Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents and I’m reading it right now and it’s incredibly awkward to read about my entire life’s problems neatly described by a complete stranger
Fuck this is literally meeeeeeee
Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents is right at the top of my psych books list along with Why Does He Do That and Trauma and Recovery.
Hi! Since it's kinda on-topic... what are the rules of selling fanwork or getting payment for it? I know a lot of people do it, but I also read that it's still illegal and companies just don't bother sueing in many cases, while others get taken down quickly (like on society6). The deancas fanzines I know always state that costs just cover printing and there are no profits whatsoever. But what like in your case, you "want to eat"?
well i didn’t know that about society6, and that explains a lot about why i’ve so rarely seen fanart there. (that also narrows down my backup plan of selling fanart there, gdi) (but also i just checked and there is A TON of fanart there?? do you mean actual screenshots from a show, or transformative/interpretive art?)
truth is, i mostly don’t know about the legal side of it (just the wanky fandom thing of “ummmm you can’t do thaaat” when it comes to money+fanfic). from what i know currently, things like patreon and ko-fi and paypal are a-okay for fic writers, so long as you don’t link them on ao3 (because ao3 is a non-profit organisation and bringing money into it compromises the website). i’ve seen people take commissions for fics for many, many years. taking a commission for fanart is pretty much a given, nobody bats an eye at that.
to be clear: what i would be doing on patreon is not selling stories in exchange for money. i would be voluntarily tipped by my readers, to perpetuate my existence, and with my existence i choose to create stories. (does that make sense? i’m not a guy paid to stand outside a cafe playing the saxaphone, i’m a guy playing a saxaphone who stands outside a cafe with an empty hat.)
my case, which i’m sure might be similar to other people’s, is that i’m unemployed due to chronic illness and a lack of qualifications, but my full-time occupation is writing. i’ve tried writing original fiction and found i’m too sick to handle it at present. my parents and the government are supporting me financially, and despite being a perfectly decent creator with an ~employable~ skill, until now i haven’t been able to move forward with supporting myself.
the fact is this: if i cannot eventually support myself through my writing, i have no other method of finding income. i have one skill (two if you count illustration), and i’m using fanfic-writing to the best of my ability, just to cope with staying alive, every day. it could be years before anything changes health-wise. like… there isn’t another option for me right now. i need to monetise what i’m already doing. and i need to find the most legal way of doing it. patreon seems like a good option to me.
