I love Dean’s facial expression when the host says:

‘Mr Trickster doesn’t like pretty boy angels!’

like dean’s thinking…

‘pretty boy angel? i never really thought… well maybe he’s a little..’

and then snaps back to his senses. It always makes me giggle wondering if that’s what he’s thinking xD

The fact that Dean has a reaction at all, and that the camera lingers on it, is telling enough. Sam doesn’t seem to care so much that the host calls Cas a “pretty boy angel”. Doesn’t even seem to register, or if it does, the “narrator” of the episode (i.e., the camera) doesn’t seem to think it’s important/relevant enough to show to us.

I mean, imagine how this exact same dialogue and reaction shots would play out if either Dean or Cas were a woman, nothing else changed… well, actually, we don’t have to imagine, because we’ve seen this kind of scene hundreds of times in romantic comedies, sitcoms, etc. We know it cold.

No matter whether Cas was the woman or Dean was the woman, we’d know instantly that the person given the reaction shot was a) attracted to the pretty angel in question, and b) trying to hide it, especially from themselves. Most importantly, we’d know c) that this is a pairing the writers of the show want us to be invested in, since the writers are letting us in on the secret knowledge that Mr./Ms. Protagonist McHidesHisFeels has these feelings in the first place. That is, being in on the joke makes us, the audience, invested; we want to see how it resolves when Protagonist McHidesHisFeels finally figures it out. It’s just storytelling 101.

Because Dean and Cas are two dudes, it’s easy to overlook or dismiss this moment as nothing sexual, but when it comes down to it, the camera is using the exact same storytelling technique you’d find used in any bit-rate romcom to illustrate sexual tension between a male and a female character.

And it’s entirely intentional, might I add, because the script of this episode not only included this dialogue, but also called for the camera to give Dean a reaction shot after the Host said “pretty boy angel”.

So basically, what I’m saying is what I’ve always said: nobody ships these two harder than the writers of the show itself.
