When everyone’s talking about Castiel’s OOC-ness in this episode, this is one of the clearest examples that it’s deliberate. It’s not the Crazy!Cas smile, it’s not Stoned!Cas smile, not even Emannuel’s forced smile at one of Dean’s jokes. It’s a small, forced, barely there smile, completely inappropriate and almost opposite of what he’s saying. His eyes dart between Sam and Dean nervously. He’s trying to get their approval. Trying so hard to show that he’s just like them - hunts like them, talks like them, laughs at the same things as they do. But it’s so small and so tense because that’s all he can manage right now. Because he’s too nervous. Because if he doesn’t fit in, if he doesn’t convinced them and himself that he belongs there, he fits there, he has nowhere else to go. And that’s just too heartbreaking.
