aziraphale is not overfond of light.

heaven is brightly illuminated, glaring and oppressively lit, as if to eliminate shadowed corners is to eliminate evil. as if through shining a relentlessly even spotlight on all actions they can prevent whatever it was that led so many angels to fall.

and in response, aziraphale cultivates his bookshop. it’s nothing but shadowed corners, but comfortably so. it’s a warm, welcoming dimness. (perhaps not if you’re a customer attempting to see the titles of potential purchases, but to aziraphale that can only be a plus.) cluttered and dark, the bookshop is everything heaven isn’t. and aziraphale feels far more at home there.

so here is aziraphale, enamored of dark, twilit lighting. perhaps hiding from his superiors. harder to see his transgressions without heaven’s harsh illumination. but also, perhaps, taking comfort in it. this is something he can control. something he can set to his own desires, no need to conform to an environment forced on him that he gets only negativity from.
