Dean is forever defending John’s parenting.

Dean wasn’t so much ‘defending’ his fathers parenting in this episode. It was more like he was asking Sam not to bring up their father and his crappy methods because it would spoil the mood. 

Sam and Dean enjoyed going to wrestling matches as children. It was a happy memory for Dean despite his fathers intentions. He didn’t want to reminded of his fathers faults while getting a chance to relive a childhood memory that gave him joy.
