astra-lux:

There’s one scene from last night thats still bothering me, and it’s the “eenie meenie miney mo” bit.
I see a lot of people upset that either more characters had to die or that Cas had to kill more of his family.
I will also preface this with, as a victim of past sexual assault, my viewpoint is most likely biased as I am more sensitive to emotional tipoffs for sexual assault in media.
There’s something about this particular torture scene that’s making it worse than any we’ve seen so far. On top of the actual torture, there’s the fact that he’s having trouble even controlling himself and the emotional warfare the other angels are putting him through as well. I feel like he was physically hurt almost the same during the torture scene in season 9 where he was captured by Malachi’s people. However this scene is /so/ different, because not only was he being tortured, he was being humiliated and ostracized. It feels like they have less interest in information (they sound so bored when questioning him) and more interested in just punishing him. He was begging for mercy, which is something I don’t think we have ever seen him do before. This was… Broken, helpless.
That torture scene was too emotionally charged for me to NOT interpret the “mo” comment as a form of sexual assault. Even putting aside the atmosphere of what’s going on in the rest of the scene, I doubt they would have given a close up camera shot of Misha’s crotch if it wasn’t intended to be a form of sexual innuendo. I feel like if it was just supposed to be about the torture, they’d have done it in a wide angle shot. There’s no special effect glowing to focus on like when they were cutting him and grace was seeping through. It’s just a shot of the angel hitting him in the junk with the angel blade. That one nonsensical word and camera shot changed the whole feeling of the scene for me. I feel like, had that scene been allowed to progress, it would have gone in a very bad direction.
Thankfully, Hannah intervenes. But then that just bothers me even more. If Hannah had been privy to the sexual nature of the torture, that adds a whole new level of complicated feelings to the situation that Cas notices, that Hannah saving him was a ploy to try to withdraw more information from him. Hannah, at least of the three, seems most conflicted about their feelings on the situation and having seen more of their personality in season 9, I was sad they had to die. However for the other two angels… Good riddance. While I’m not overjoyed that Cas had to kill more Angels, those Angels were not his brothers, and I feel like by the end of the scene, he knew that too.

I really wanted to enjoy this scene, because Cas + bondage. But I didn’t, and all of this is a big reason why.

Very well said and I though I was the only one who felt quite uncomfortable in watching this scene…
