f-ckyeahfutbol:

I’ve been researching historical American gay slang, because why not (my actual interest is in the history of bisexuality, but it seems to be a poorly researched area of historical studies, although props to bisexual.org and the Journal of Bisexuality), and as I am nothing if not generous regarding Thoughts I Had On Dean Winchester Lately…

I made a post a while ago on how Dean’s deaths at the Mystery Spot were all double entendres for sex acts with both men and women, and I may make a post at some point in the future on the completely co-incidental and statistically-insignificant-I’m-sure correlation of these epithets and appellations to Dean’s character, and how there are very few that could be applied to Sam alone (e. g. “having man oil in the trunk”, “cleaning the kitchen”, “brushing teeth”, “humming a tune”, “eating the ham”, “opening the cash register” – you’re starting to sense a pattern, I’ll bet, and you think I’m making this shit up, but you’d be mistaken). But, you know, let’s pretend for the moment that they’re all isolated incidents and not intentional references from the writers, out of whom Carver especially has a history of inserting oblique innuendos (forever snickering at Digger, the town bum).

Let’s have a few thoughts on Benny, the dude who died in the late 50s/early 60s, and what Benny hears when Dean says “the angel”, and what Benny means when says “crazy aunt”.

Benny has about as much reason to believe actual angels exist as Dean “There’s no such thing as angels” Winchester, who had spent his entire life believing in the supernatural, did before one dragged his ass out of hell. Less, even, since there were 100% less angels in Purgatory than on earth, no one had even heard of such a thing. Then this dude comes along, looking for his angel. Regardless of what you think about Dean’s sexuality, Benny draws the conclusion that he’s gay two seconds after meeting him.

Their initial encounter is laced with innuendo. And to this sailor? To him, angel is a gay epithet. And this is confirmed when he calls Castiel ‘aunt’. Castiel takes offense at the crazy part, but actually addresses the falsely applied epithet. They highlight the term by offering it the wrong definition in the scene. But it’s not a generic insult, it is specifically a gay slur, and it’s directed at Dean, an attempt to get him to leave Castiel behind. Castiel is the crazy one, Dean is the one whose aunt he is. And while Castiel doesn’t get the jab, Dean does.

And Dean’s response to this is the same as it always is when it is a friend or an ally that offends his sexuality (calling him a fudgepop, asking if he’s strictly into dick, placing the queen’s crown on him, calling him a queen, asking if he’s eaten fairy dick) or masculinity (calling him pretty, having delicate features for a hunter, calling him by female names), which is to say: none. He doesn’t react to these from friends and allies. He internalizes only to project later, on his brother and on people he feels safe offending. Because there is nothing Dean Winchester fears more than people leaving him. It’s not about his sexuality, it’s about his defense mechanisms.

Likewise, it’s never about his sexuality when he responds to hostility by saying he doesn’t swing that way or he doesn’t play for that team. He is pre-emptively attacking perceived threats. He feels cornered and lashes out verbally, and it has dick-all to do with who he is attracted to personally: it’s about the people attacking him. He takes something he himself has no defense against, and attempts to use it as a weapon against these antagonists, hoping that they will be as helpless against his verbal attack as he has been his entire life, the male-model looking dude in the hard-tack American underclass.
