So Dean is asking Cas to kill him if he goes dark side. This pretty much sets up a scenario in which Cas will have to be present for Dean going dark side in the future, otherwise what’s the narrative purpose of Dean bringing this up to begin with? It’s not necessarily going to be something that happens next week, he won’t necessarily be present during or after Dean’s apparent slaughter of all those people, but sooner or later he’s going to be placed in a position where he has to decide if he’s going to take Dean’s life or not…

Dean essentially being un-killable because of the mark (or rather, unable to be killed without coming back as a demon) aside, Dean’s life is being placed in Cas’ hands. Not only that, but it appears Dean is opening up to Cas in a way that he is unwilling to open up to anyone at the moment, not even himself. He told Jody he was fine, he’s continually telling Sam he’s fine, he probably looks himself in the mirror and says “I’m fine… I’m fine…” over and over until he maybe starts to believe it, but when Cas is sitting across from him he can look him in the eyes and just be honest and real with him. He’s scared. He needs a friend he can trust… and Cas will always be that for him.

In 10x08 Jody told Donna that she can’t get through to Alex, and I have to wonder if when the time comes if Sam won’t be able to get through to Dean. It will take something more, some other kind of love, maybe from a friend who is possibly going to make a promise he’s not entirely sure he can keep. Maybe he’ll agree, maybe he’ll tell Dean he’ll do as he wishes and take him out, but when the time comes… he might just try and get through to him first. And when he tries, maybe he’ll succeed… maybe that thing that allows Dean to open up to Cas in a way he can’t with anyone else will be the same thing that allows Cas to help Dean find the light. Maybe he’ll finally be the one to show Dean that he can be saved.
